HCFA Advocacy Day coordinators: Whitney McFadden, Stephanie Smith, Brandon Sandine, Katie Ni

Objectives: Introduce participants, overview of the goals. History of advocacy in AMSA. How to be involved.

Dinner will be served.

 

5:45 - 6: 30           History of US Healthcare Reform, the ACA, International Universal Healthcare 

Dr. David Rabin M.D. Research Professor, Department of Family Medicine Director,

Division of Community Healthcare Studies

Objectives: To understand the market development and failure in US health care. To emphasize the progress and pitfalls of the ACA. To describe the end goals of a healthcare system that should lead eventually to equitable, affordable, sustainable and universal health care – the framework of a single payer system.

 

6:30 - 7: 15           Advocacy as Physicians and Medical Students

Dr. Lawrence Deyton M.D. Clinical Professor of Medicine, George Washington University School of Medicine and Health Sciences, And Associate Dean of Clinical Public Health George Washington University School of Public Health

Objectives: To provide professional career development for students interested in making policy part of their career.

 

7:15- 8:00              Organizing and communicating; Medical Student Advocates

Nick Unger, veteran labor and health care activist and educator

Objectives: To allow participants training in skills necessary to create an advocacy group and succeed in messaging for a cause.

 

 

8:00 – 8:30            Effective Messaging in Health Policy Advocacy, the ACA and Beyond

Rachel Degolia, Universal Healthcare Action Network

Objectives: To develop own personal narratives how our current healthcare system can and should evolve.  

 

8:30– 9:00             Intro to Single Payer and H.R. 676

Robert Zarr M.D. Whitney McFadden, Brandon Sandine

Objectives: Provide the foundation for an understanding of single payer and comparative healthcare in other countries that have succeeded with similar models. Introduction to basic tenants of H.R. 676.
